to my family

So I just have to say how much I love my job! I love working for Starbucks and I love the people that I work.

Robyn is on the board of the YWCA and Angeline’s is a woman’s shelter supported through the Y. I organized a half day where our team did community service for the shelter.

We cleaned the kitchen and the dining room, served food to the homeless woman and spent time talking with them (or the ones who were willing and capable of talking). Some of the woman are on drugs or under the influence, some look like they would be homeless with ragged clothes and dirty hands, some looked completely put together with a North Face jacket on and hair/makeup done. I asked one of the employees at Angeline’s if they are all truly homeless because from the looks of it, some of these woman look put together. She told me that they are homeless. To be homeless doesn’t necessarily mean living on the streets begging for change but some of these woman could have gotten depressed and lost their jobs/homes/families, ext. Angeline’s offers a safe place for these woman to come during the day to shower, wash clothes, sit and read, get counseling and get a warm meal. All food and supplies are provided through donations.

Although we only volunteered for 4 hours to these woman who live this every day of their lives, I saw the difference we made. They warmed up to us quickly and thanked us over and over for our service. I quickly warmed up to them as well and no longer saw the physical part of them but saw the hurt and hope in their eyes. It felt good to help for the day but it also drove something inside of me (which has been there for a while) to do more for people in need and not just during the holidays.

I wanted to share this with you because we are all so blessed and lucky to have so much in our lives. I am the first to admit that I can be some-what materialistic J but this service made me take a look at my life and realize how blessed I truly am. How wonderful each of you are in our lives and how much I love you and am thankful for all that you are and all that you do.

Here is to looking at the glass half full, to being thankful for what we have because there is someone else out there who is struggling and to knowing that small actions like the one our team did can make a huge difference in someone else’s life.
